Whenever I’m in the “Family Planning” aisle at Walmart, usually I just spring for the condoms that are on sale today. Sure, I can always score condoms at various free clinics and free love inclined coffee shops in Oakland, but it’s always good to have some back up, just in case. About a week and a half ago I bought a 36 pack of Trojans, you know, the one that has 4 different varieties of condoms on them. Generally, it would never occur to me to buy those weird “Fire & Ice” condoms or anything other than standard, cheap condoms because, I’ll be honest, I’m not the one with the penis and different types of condoms don’t really create any marginal increase in pleasure, so who cares. (Maybe the dude cares, but if he really cares that much, shouldn’t he be the one buying condoms? And while we’re on that subject, how come it’s always my responsibility to have the condoms? Dudes in this city are so underprepared. I guess every boy in Oakland failed in the Boy Scouts department.)

Anyways, back on topic. I wasn’t really paying attention to the type of condom that the boy was putting on (mostly I just cared that it got on there), but after a few minutes there was this weird tingly-numb sensation in my pussy that immediately made me think, “I’m dying inside my vagina.” But, no, a few seconds later, I thought, “Maybe I’m contracting an STD right now and this is what it feels like….”

  • Fitting Matters: Solutions for Condom Size Problems

Fitting Matters: Solutions for Condom Size Problems

This post suggests solutions for problem-points on condoms which are too tight, too loose, too short, too long. This post was updated 21 March 2014.

For a quicker way to search and compare condoms, try our new Condom Size Calculator!

A study published in June 2012 argues that penis shape and size must be taken more seriously by public health officials and activists who aim to increase consistent and correct condom use.  Researchers Michael Reece and Debra Herbenick of Indiana University found a substantial percentage of men reported condoms being too tight, too loose, too short, too long, breakage, leakage…basically, general condom discomfort that can result in misuse or disuse, which translates into a serious public health issue.

Condom Size Problems and SolutionsThe majority of condom products are fitted for “average” length at 6.4 inches when erect (see the Kinsey report and The Simple Truth about Erect Penis Size).  However, as Reece and Herbenick found, length of the condom is not the greatest discomfort; rather, it is fitting around the head and shaft that scored highest among complaints, with penis base at a close second.  For example, of those men who reported that condoms were too tight, 66% reported tightness around the base, 70.4% around the glans, and 73% around the shaft.

The study concludes that HIV and STI practitioners must get involved with condom manufacturers to ensure that condoms are consistent with men’s experiences of fitting and pleasure.  Indeed, no matter what size, all men should have access to well-fitting condoms.

    Jump to:
    If “Condoms are too Tight”
    If “Condoms are too Loose”
    If “Condoms are too Short”
    If “Condoms are too Long”.

Quick Tip! The FC2 internal condom is one size fits all. Because it’s made to form to the inner walls of the receptive partner, penis size is irrelevant. This is a great solution for those fitting woes.

    Sizing

To know which condom width fits, we recommend dividing penis circumference by 2.25. Here we explain where we got this formula.

    Image from @TheyFitCondoms
    Image from @TheyFitCondoms

Given the wide range of condoms on the market, prevention providers can play a valuable role in helping men to identify condoms that suit their size specificities, hence increasing the likelihood of consistent condom usage.  For a large proportion of those who reported tightness around the glands (70%), for example, HIV and STI prevention providers may alleviate men’s perceptions that condoms all are too tight by recommending condoms that are designed with a more bulbous head to reduce constriction.  As our chart shows below, Durex condoms and One Condoms tend to offer a greater variety in contoured shapes and head room.

Here we have organized a list of condoms according to the 4 “problem points” identified in Reece and Herbenick’s study.  Under each complaint we provide a list of condoms by brand that may help alleviate discomfort.

Please note: External links may be affiliates that give us a small commission. This is not a company endorsement.  Due to the fact that major North American brands are Durex, Trojan, Lifestyles, Beyond 7 and Caution Wear, our first aim is to gather these dimensions. We continue to update.

  • What Condom Size Am I?

    What Condom Size Am I?

The reason so many guys ask, What Condom Size Am I? is because condom sizing and how to measure ourselves is not very clear.  There is no such thing as one-size fits every individual or couple.

And yet using the right condom is essential.  The wrong size increases the risk of breakage, slippage and discomfort.  Experimenting and finding the correct condom is the difference between those who enjoy sex with condoms and those who hate them and use them inconsistently, putting themselves and others at risk of STIs and unwanted pregnancy.

    What Condom Size Am I?

The first thing you need to do is measure the size of your penis. This isn’t hard (but your penis must be to get correct measurements!).  There are three main measurements you need to take. First, from the base of your penis which is the part where the condom would stop rolling (no need to put the condom over your testicles!) and measure up to the tip of your penis….This is your length.

Then measure the girth of your penis at the mid-point of the shaft. You can wrap a tape measure around the shaft or you can use a string and then measure the string with a ruler.

Most condom widths are measured by the condom laying flat (it is not the circumference). Condoms are designed to fit securely while forming the body shape. The base width should be less than half the girth of your penis size by about half an inch (13mm). Therefore to know if your girth will fit a condom width simply divide your penis circumference by 2.25 (In this post we explain how we got this formula).

    What Sizes Exist?

Now you have the measurements you can go over to our Condom Size Calculator. There you will find measurements for each condom brand and be able to find your size and compare what exactly “Snug” “Regular” and “Large” mean.  We also offer updated size charts based on the top sold brands: Trojan Condom, Lifestyles, Durex, KimonoONE Condoms and Caution Wear. More brands to come!ruler

The average condom length in North America…

is 7.5″/190.5mm.  Since a vast portion of men are between 5.1″ – 6.5″, most do not need to be concern with length.  If length is your concern, check out our condom fitting solutions chart for recommendations to specific needs.

Girth or “thickness” is crucial.  The average condom is made to fit a 4.8″- 5.2″ erect circumference.  In condom terms, that equals approximately 2.0″/50.8mm-2.2″/55.8mm base wide (remember, width is measured by the condom lying flat).

General, rule of thumb: If you measure less than 4.8 inches girth, go with a snugger fit.  Fit you are greater than 5.2 inches, select large condoms, such as SKYN Large, Durex XXL, and Magnums.

    Shape Matters

However, this does not solve all problems.  What if you are skinny and long, short and wide?  You will also need to think about shape and material (latex, polyisoprene, etc.), especially if you find you’re in between sizes.

A common complaint is that condoms are too tight around the head.  So, many condoms companies have now designed condoms with oversized head room, including flair shape design and extra bulbous head.  Here are the top North American brands:

    LifeStyles Pleasure Shape (Bulbous head)
    LifeStyles WYLD (Bulbous head)
    LifeStyles THYN (Flare shape)
    Trojan Her Pleasure (Flare shape)
Trojan Pleasures Ecstasy Fire and Ice (Flare shape)
    Trojan Stimulations Ecstasy (Tapered flare)
Trojan Magnum (Tapered at the base, flare at head)
ONE Condom Pleasure Plus (Roomy pouch at the head)
ONE Condom Tantric Pleasures (Wider base/head, tapered along the shaft)
ONE Condom Pleasure Dome (oversized head, regular base width)
Durex PleasureMAX (wider base and head)
    Kimono Maxx (Wider head)

Remember, you can find exact measurements for each condom on their respective size charts or on our condom size calculator.

There are also condoms which are longer than average, but regular or smaller width.

    Trojan Supra
Trojan ThinTensity (slightly longer and wider; not as big as Magnums).
Durex Sensi Thin (longer and slightly narrow than regulars).

Or how about wider shaft, but close fitting head:

    Lifestyles 3SUM

Elasticity.  Latex or Poly or the other Poly?

There are two new non-latex options available now.  Polyurethane was first introduced by Durex in the 1990s.  This material is less elastic than latex and polyisoprene, and is slightly thinner.  So it can be ideal for those who prefer less skin-tight condoms that clings to every contour of his tool, and instead prefer a bit of give in the condom.

The most popular polyurethane condom in North America is Trojan Supra.

Polyisoprene is the latest non-latex material for male condoms, introduced by Lifestyles in 2008.  This material is more soft, elastic and form-fitting than both polyurethane and latex.  This material is ideal because it can stretch more comfortably over shapely parts of the penis.  So this may be a better option if you are in between sizes then the uniquely shaped condoms.  Polyisoprene is available in North America by Durex Avanti Bare and Lifestyles SKYN.

    TROJAN Condoms Size Chart

trojan condom size chartTrojan’s website offers a full view of their products and a selector tool to help you find the lubrication and material combo that suits you best.

However, their sizes are not as comprehensive.  They simply classify their condoms as Regular, Large, Extra Large.  Here we have updated a condom size chart that lists each product according to the three sizes and latex or non-latex.  We offer dimensions we’ve measured ourselves or derived from our affiliates at Lucky Bloke and Undercover Condoms.  For more about Trojan and the BEST to WORST, check out their profile summary.

Check out our new Condom Size Calculator (launched in Oct 2013) for a comparative search of all condoms available on the North American market.

    Measurement Tip:
The average condom length is 7.5″/190mm.  This will fit the vast portion of men who are between 5.1″-6.5′ (129.5mm-152.4mm). A new study determined average erection to be 5.56 inches long and 4.8 inches girth.  If length is your concern, check out our condom fitting solutions chart for recommendations to specific needs.

When it comes to condom fitting, girth is crucial (see our guide for measuring penis).  A regular size is made to fit 4.8″ to 5.1″ (122mm – 130mm) girth. That fits 50mm-55mm base width (measured by the condom laying flat. It is not the circumference).

To determine condom width simply divide your penis circumference by 2.25. How did we get this formula? Read about our research here.

Preference will vary but in general we recommend that if you measure less than 4.8 inches (122mm) in girth, go with a snugger fit.  Fit you are greater than 5.15 inches (130mm), select Magnums.

Warning: Trojan offers pre-lubricated condoms with Nonoxynol-9. The World Health Organization recommends using this spermicide very sparingly (if at all) as studies show it can be harmful to internal tissue and may increase the risk of contracting STIs.

The Legal Stuff: Age of consent and medical advice

The size charts are made to help you find the brand that suits your size range and needs.  If you cannot find the answer to your question, just ask.  But please be aware that we do not condone sexual activity of under-age males and females in state or country.  Also, we are not medical professionals.  We offer opinions from personal experience and research.

For a younger audience, here is one place to start:  Scarleteen.  For all ages Planned Parenthood is highly recommended. For sexual minorities and non-conforming gender folk, check out the Judgement Free Health Care Providers directory

This is the latest edition of our condom size chart with the latest products tailored by condom brand.  During our research we noticed that some condom retail sites give conflicting measurements for the same condom.  So, we measured many of these condoms ourselves and with condom services including Undercover Condoms and Lucky Bloke.  If you come across false measurements, let us know!

  • Trojan Condoms: Profile Summary

Trojan Condom, Her PleasureTrojan (at least in North America) is to condoms as Kleenex is to tissues.  It’s original manufacturer, Young’s Rubber Company, was the first to develop the latex condom in 1920 and has had a monopoly in drugstores ever since.  According to market research firm, SymphonyIRI Group, in 2010, Trojan took 70% of the US condom market bringing in about $270 million annually.

Trojan’s Magnum line offers some of the largest of the crop, both long by wide.  Their Magnum XL is 8.1in/206mm length and 2.3in/55.88mm width (Durex XXL is 9.5in/241mm).  The rule of thumb: If you measure greater than 5.2in/132mm in girth, than Magnum condoms may be best for you.  If your girth is greater than 5.8in/147mm you might consider Magnum XL.

    Best Condom:

Among their 27 condoms variations we found Trojan Supra with the highest rating by numerous independent sources, such as Slate Mag (2005), Undercover Condoms, CondomUSA, and Condom Jungle.  This condom is not made of latex, but of microsheer polyurethane, which bills it as “ultra thin” (not to be confused with Trojan’s Ultra Thin latex version).  One major draw back: the Supra is only available with Nonoxynol-9, a spermicidal chemical.

Trojan Extended Pleasure is also popularly rated by the same sources.  It contains a special lubricant (benzocaine, a common anesthetic) that is very effective in preventing early ejaculation.  Personally, I found this condom to be unreliable and messy.  Here is my review from a few years ago. If you do try this condom, be careful not to spill the large glob of lubricant that sits at the tip.  It tastes and smells funny.

    Not so hot:

On the flip side of Trojan’s dominance, Condom Depot’s annual condom awards reports Trojan condoms scoring low for four consecutive years.  Their reviews complain about a lack of sensitivity, dryness, and an overt latex smell.

  • Trojan Magnum XL

    Trojan Magnum XL

    Image from undercovercondoms.com

Some argue that there is little difference between “XL”, “Large” and “Regular” condoms and that condom size is just a marketing ploy to feed “big” egos.  In some ways, this is true.  Check out our guide for converting penis size to condom width. The table shows that there is a lot of overlap between condom sizes.

We at Condom Monologues vehemently debunk the size-matters-myth. However, we DO agree that condom size matters for safety and pleasure.  Too baggy and the condom bunches and slips off; too tight and it pinches and rips.  Any man who is extremely larger than average (between 5″-6.0″ long) and has used a regular size condom knows what we are talking about when we say “pinch”.  In fact, a recent study by Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender and Reproduction found that 44% of males felt that the last condom they used did not fit and was typically tighter rather than loose-fitting.

People have been asking how BIG the Trojan Magnum XL really is compared to other condoms on the market.  There are a lot of conflicting measurements and reviews out there; some reporting it as the widest condom; that it’s ideal if you are particularly thick; others say it is thinner and shorter than its competitor, Durex XXL.  One personnel from the Trojan marketing team even stated to NY Times that “you don’t have to be an overly endowed man to use a Magnum and enjoy it” (NY Times 2010).

Unfortunately, Trojan’s doesn’t offer standardized dimensions.  They just classify condoms as “Regular”, “Large”, and “XL”, with no indication of actual size and shape.

Here we pooled our research to offer objective info (we are not affiliated with any manufacturer) on the Magnum story: Why it was made, how popular it is, and how do its dimensions compare for those who need larger than average protection.  Please let us know whether this article has been helpful.

Further recommendations for larger, wider, and longer condoms can be found at our Solutions Size Chart. Or try our latest tool, the Condom Calculator (launched Oct 2013) and our Table Converter for penis girth to condom width.

    XL History

The Magnum line was introduced in the USA in 2001 and its popularity has grown to jumbo proportions.  According to NY Times, Magnum alone (not including other Trojan products) holds 18% share of the total condom market in 2010.  That is impressive considering that Durex has 14% of the USA condom market.  This demonstrates that there is a great demand for XL condoms and makes us wonder why there are not more companies offering XL.

    How XL is it?

Well, this may seem to be a straight forward answer, but unfortunately, there are a lot of conflicting measurements across the web. And really, everyone is endowed with different preferences of what feels right for their unique size and shape.  So the best thing to do is test run a sample pack of large condoms.

We’ve pooled together 7 different sizes from seven different sources (including undercover condoms, condom jungle, wow condoms, condom elite and others) and identified the smallest to largest measurements reported.  We also searched community forums and product reviews.

We conclude that the Trojan Magnum XL is approximately 2.3″/58mm base width and 8.5″/216mm length.  This is about .5″ wider and 1.0″ longer than regular condoms.  If you are are 5.3″/134mm or larger in girth, the Magnum XL may be the best option for you.

  • Trojan, Ultra Thin

[ratings] Trojan Ultra ThinTrojan flags this condom as its “thinnest” one ever, with a thickness of .0020 inches. Looking at other reviews, many said that this condom breaks. I never experienced this. However, I did find this condom to be rough and dry, despite the water-based lube.  “Thinnest” does not denote sensitivity. It felt like a rubber dildo.  The ring was stiff, with little elasticity.  Ultra Thin was hard to roll onto my partner.  Each time we had to pause and fight with it to get the ring down to his base. Strange, considering that the condom is a standard 7inches in length with 2in width.

  • Trojan, Extended Pleasure

    Trojan, Extended Pleasure

extended pleasureWith a “climax control lubricant”? More like a pleasure prevention lube. As far as extending pleasure, yes, it did prevent my partner from cumming early and at all! The Trojan, Extended Pleasure condom is smelly, sticky and wet. So wet, that when you peel it out of its wrapping, the lubricant drips everywhere. Be careful what you touch after handling. Its overpowering, sour smell tends to linger. And to top it off, 3 out of the 7 times I’ve used it this condom failed. Once it numbed my partner so much that he lost all springing spunk. Second time it leaked. Then another, it broke! If the appeal is to postpone male orgasm the thing better be able to withstand long duration.
